Dice Portsmouth Opens in Albert Road

The long awaited launch date has passed and Portsmouth’s first ever board game lounge is officially open to the public.

Dice Portsmouth has been several years in the making. The team behind the new venture almost gave up on several occasions as their search for a permanent home proved fruitless.

Following a successful Kickstarter campaign back in 2015, that saw a target of £11,000 smashed, business owners Lee, Rikki, and Andy finally struck gold with premises secured at the old Conservative Club along Albert Road in Southsea, you may remember the recent controversy around this property as the owners looked to open a lap-dancing club which was eventually quashed during planning application.

Sited at 149 Albert Road, next door to The Wedgewood Rooms, Dice is much bigger than the façade might suggest. Step inside and you’re greeted by a huge open space that lends itself perfectly to gaming, socialising with friends and family, or enjoying a snack from Dice’s hot and cold food offering.

In addition to the numerous gaming tables Dice has sectioned off two additional areas, one for retail of the latest board games on offer, and a small waiting area for customers to relax while tables become free. We visited Dice during autumn half-term week and the games lounge was packed to the rafters with families. Worried you might not get a table? No problem, just contact the Dice team and pre-book your table.

Customers to Dice can enjoy a drink or something to eat at any of the tables inside, served up from the cleverly named Ackbar’s Snack Bar, or simply get straight to the gaming with one of over 500 board games on offer. Gaming is charged at £4 per person per day, £3 for students, service workers, and children under 16.

Dice Portsmouth are also launching a membership scheme charged at £25 per year. Members will get all the latest board games news and offers, will be invited to some fun events during the year, and get a reduced table fee of £2 per session.

Dice has immediately integrated with other local business favourites including stocking beers from Portsmouth’s Staggeringly Good, and offering fresh pastries from Bread Addition of Elm Grove.

All in all the team behind Dice Portsmouth have shown what hard work and an amazing idea can create. They’re an awesome addition to the plethora of independent Portsmouth businesses making our little island city so unique.
