Gunwharf Quays celebrate Chinese New Year in style

Shoppers and visitors at Gunwharf Quays will enjoy Chinese New Year festivities on Saturday 4th February, marking the Year of the Rooster.

Inspired by the Orient, guests will be given a taste of an authentic New Year celebration, with a traditional Chinese dragon parade to music by drum artists, with fortune cookies being handed out to spectators.

A spectacular Shaolin Kung Fu show by the UK Shaolin Temple will bring the celebrations to a close, with talented and daring performers demonstrating advanced weapons techniques, lying on a bed of nails, stick and brick breaking, and group nunchuk displays.

Founder of UK Shaolin Temple, Shi Yan Min, said: “We are delighted to be part of the festivities at Gunwharf Quays and bringing some of the traditions, fun, and energy of the Chinese New Year to its guests. We hope that they may be inspired by the performances and even have a go after the Show with some Kung Fu moves or Tai Chi forms.”

From 9:00am, 5,000 shoppers will receive special New Year Hongbao red envelopes full of exclusive discounts and freebies — a nod to the Chinese custom of giving monetary gifts in red envelopes during holidays and special occasions.

Stores including Osprey London, Karen Millen, Le Creuset, Coast, and Molton Brown will be offering up to 40% off outlet prices, as well as in-store giveaways.

Guests will also be able to cash in offers at some of the centre’s restaurants, such as Wagamama and Bella Italia, to make a day of it and enjoy a relaxing meal with the family.

Senior marketing manager Yvonne Clay said: “We are delighted to be celebrating Chinese New Year at Gunwharf Quays, and to be offering such an authentic and exciting display for our guests to kick start the Year of the Rooster.

“The Chinese New Year is a fantastic opportunity to treat our guests to a great family day out with unmissable offers, Chinese traditions, and amazing performances. We look forward to welcoming the local Chinese community and visitors alike to join in the festivities, and take advantage of our one-day exclusive offers.”
